Dubai airport: world’s busiest for international traffic

DXB saw almost 30 million international passengers in 2021

Dubai International (DXB) has maintained its position as the world’s busiest airport in terms of international traffic, according to the newly released ranking by Airports Council International (ACI).

DXB recorded more than 29.1 million international passengers in 2021, up by almost 13% compared with 2020.

Istanbul Airport came second in the ranking, with 26.4 million passengers, followed by airports in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Doha, London, Antalya, Madrid and Cancun.

In the overall rankings combining numbers for both domestic and international passengers in 2021, the USA came out on top due to its scale of population.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in Georgia topped the list with 75.7 million domestic and international passengers. Dallas/Fort Worth International was the second-busiest airport with a total of 62.5 million passengers, and Denver International Airport, with 58.8 million passengers, took third position.

According to ACI, the total number of global passengers in 2021 is estimated to be nearly 4.5 billion, representing an annual increase of 25% year-on-year and a drop of more than 50% when compared to 2019’s pre-pandemic figures.

Passenger traffic at the top 10 busiest airports accounted for almost 10% of total global traffic and represents an increase of almost 52% from 2020, but a drop of 29% from 2019.
