Millions of utensils will be reduced, recycled and reused
Emirates has unveiled a new closed loop recycling initiative this month in which onboard items, such as plastic trays, bowls and dishes, will now be recycled in a local facility and remade into new Emirates meal service products.
The initiative marks a transition to a circular economy where items will be reduced, recycled and reused.
Millions of old and damaged meal service items from Economy and Premium Economy Class will be collected after flights and transported to a facility in Dubai to be ground down, reprocessed and manufactured into new dishes, bowls and trays before being sent to Emirates Flight Catering.
In partnership with deSter FZE UAE, a provider of service ware concepts to the aviation industry, Emirates will produce new dinnerware containing around 25% reused material, called recyclate, to be brought back into service on aircraft, and the percentage is set to increase over time.
