VP of Operations at JA Resorts & Hotels in Dubai was “true force in world of hospitality”
Revered hotelier Michael Payne, Vice President of Operations at JA Resorts & Hotels, has passed away.
With a career spanning more than 35 years in luxury hotels – almost 20 of them in the UAE and Saudi Arabia – Michael’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes, led by JA Resorts & Hotels who said they were “deeply saddened” by the loss of their colleague and friend.
In a heartfelt LinkedIn post, the Dubai-born group shared: “Michael was a true force in the world of hospitality – passionate, driven and endlessly generous with his time and knowledge. He inspired those around him with his energy, professionalism and unwavering commitment to excellence.
“To many of us, Michael was more than a colleague. He was a mentor, a cheerleader and a friend whose warmth and laughter could light up any room.
"His impact on our industry and on the people lucky enough to work alongside him will be felt for years to come.”

Michael joined JA Resorts & Hotels in March this year, following a distinguished career in senior roles with leading global brands.
Notably, he spent 14 years with One&Only Resorts, including six as General Manager at The Palm Jumeirah property.
His first GM role was at The One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives, and his résumé also includes senior positions with Kempinski, along with 15 years at Hyatt working across seven countries, from Mexico to Australia.
The admiration for Michael was evident from across the hospitality community, with former colleagues and peers paying tribute on LinkedIn, sharing stories of his leadership, generosity and friendship.
Stephan Schupbach, CEO of Chedi Hospitality, recalled “fond memories with Michael” from their time at Reethi Rah, while Soufiane ElAllam, Hilton’s Complex Commercial Director, described Michael as “a true gentleman and a passionate hotelier”.
Ricardo Vale, GM at Emaar Hospitality Group, reflected: “The learnings, unforgettable memories and Michael’s genuine sense of hospitality will remain a North Star.”
