EMEA region travellers show growing confidence

Skyscanner study shows trips are being booked further in advance

According to Skyscanner’s latest Horizons report, travellers from the Europe, Middle East and Africa region are exhibiting increasing confidence with trips being booked further in advance than in the previous year, marking a return to traditional seasonality.

Skyscanner’s data chartered traveller behaviour, booking windows, destination choices and trending destinations.

The number of EMEA travellers booking ahead between 60 and 89 days and more than 90 days have both increased.

The reported stated: "At 53%, more EMEA travellers (+4%) are choosing Europe as a summer holiday destination in 2024 compared to last year. The only other increase in popularity (+1%) from last year is Southeast Asia, which sees 12% of EMEA travellers choosing to visit the region.

"This shift is being primarily driven by a -4% decline in North America. It’s likely the strength of the US Dollar is encouraging some travellers in the EMEA region to seek more affordability and low-cost travel closer to home."

The rest of the list was dominated by Greek destinations.

The top 10 global destinations searched for are:

  1. Palma, Majorca
  2. “Everywhere”
  3. Ibiza, Balearics, Spain
  4. Bangkok, Thailand
  5. Zante (Zakynthos), Greece
  6. Mykonos, Greece
  7. Heraklion, Greece
  8. Corfu, Greece
  9. New York, US
  10. Sydney, Australia

The average trip length in Europe was between six and eight days.

Skyscanner head of destination partnerships, Zeynep Mutlu Bigalı said: “Our latest Horizon insights reveal a travel landscape that is both familiar and evolving. While traditional seasonality is returning and popular destinations remain in demand, travellers are also seeking value and exploring options closer-to-home.

“Across Skyscanner’s platforms we have seen incredible demand at the start of the year and we expect this to continue as we head into the summer, especially in regions such as Europe, North America and North Asia.”
