Saudi Arabia breaks world record for largest hot air balloon show

The record was set at Hegra in AlUla, the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia

Saudi AlUla Moments and SAHAB (Saudi Arabian Hot Air Ballooning Federation) have jointly broken the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest hot air balloon ‘glow show’, featuring illuminated balloons.

Held as part of AlUla Skies, a new festival in AlUla, the show saw 142 brightly-lit balloons create a display over the ancient site.

The previous record was also achieved in AlUla, with 100 balloons, during the Winter at Tantora arts and culture festival in 2019.

The event followed the signing of a MoU between the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) and SAHAB early this month, with the aim to make AlUla the centre of hot air ballooning activities in Saudi Arabia.

The festival also included sunrise and sunset balloon experiences with around 150 balloons each morning floating over the desert landscapes.

The event was part of the AlUla Moments event calendar, designed to offer engaging arts, music and cultural experiences to visitors. The events continue with AlUla Wellness festival and Arts AlUla running until the end of March 2022.
