The new ship's inaugural sailing has been moved to 28 February

Princess Cruises has cancelled the already delayed departure of new ship Sun Princess. The inaugural sailing is now scheduled to depart from Rome on 28 February 2024.

The ship was due to sail on its maiden voyage from Rome on 18 February 2024, but the sailing was cancelled following a “mutual agreement” between the line and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

In a letter sent to travel agents and customers, Princess president John Padgett said the line had taken delivery of Sun Princess but it was required to remain in the shipyard for “additional technical work to be completed”.

Princess confirmed customers booked on the sailing would receive a full refund of their fare and pre-purchased onboard services, as well as a 50% future cruise credit. Those yet to travel to Rome for the 10-day sailing will be provided with up to US$200 per person to cover change fees for flights, while those who have already travelled to Italy will be reimbursed for their round-trip airfare, and compensated for hotel rooms and expenses for stays on 18 and 19 February.

As with the initial cancellation, travel agency commissions will be protected.

The letter said: “We regret to announce that we have no other option than to cancel the 18 February voyage. We share in your deep disappointment and frustration, and sincerely apologise for the extreme disruption the late cancellation of this voyage creates.

“We understand the inconvenience and frustration that this news brings, and we do sincerely apologise for the disruption to your travel plans We are committed to ensuring that your future experiences with Princess Cruises are nothing short of extraordinary.

"We genuinely hope that you will consider joining us on another Sun Princess voyage, where we promise to provide you with an unforgettable journey filled with adventure, relaxation, and cherished memories.

“Once again, we extend our deepest apologies for the inconvenience this situation has caused and thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
