A study by Comparethemarket.com has identified landmarks around the world that people dream of visiting, from natural wonders to man-made icons.

The company analysed the volume of Instagram hashtags and Google searches for popular landmarks across the globe, revealing the top 10 places that travellers want to see. 

Burj Khalifa in Dubai was ranked the most popular global landmark, with an average monthly global search volume of 2,240,000 and a total of 6,179,975 images uploaded under the hashtag #burjkhalifa on Instagram.

The Eiffel Tower ranks as the second most popular landmark with an average of 1.5 million searches per month. This is also the most Instagrammed landmark around the world, with 7,192,685 people using the hashtag #eiffeltower.

In third place is Times Square, with almost 5 million Instagram posts and 1.5 million search queries each month.

According to the data, the top 10 most popular landmarks around the world are:

  3. Times Square
  4. Niagara Falls
  5. Taj Mahal
  6. Grand Canyon
  7. Machu Picchu
  8. Notre Dame
  9.  White House
  10. Sagrada Familia
