Want to run a bookshop in the Maldives for a year?

It's not your usual job in travel – but it's highly sought after

Soneva Fushi, a five-star luxury resort in the Baa Atoll in the Maldives, has opened applications for a new 'Barefoot Bookseller'.

Working in partnership with Ultimate Library, the resort has been hosting pop-up bookshops since 2018. The campaign to find the right candidate to run them has captured the imagination of the world, becoming a winning PR campaign.

But it's not just about putting Soneva Fushi front of mind. The ideal candidate will be kept busy writing a blog and hosting literary events and workshops.

The job ad reads: 'The ideal candidate will be a team player with a passion for books and the ability to engage with guests of all ages. They will have excellent written and verbal English skills; a lively tone of voice to write an entertaining blog that captures the exhilarating life of a desert island bookseller, and the skills to host workshops and other guest experiences.'

The lucky candidate will be flown to the Maldives to join the Soneva Fushi team in October 2022 for a 12-month placement.

The first placement began in 2018, originally for six months. In 2021, the role was expanded to a 12-month placement, and proved popular in the quieter months.
