Michelin Guide launches hotel ratings

Launching in 2024, the Michelin Key Guide will rank hotels based on five criteria

World-famous restaurant ranking platform the Michelin Guide will begin rating hotels, starting from 2024, with its new Michelin Key system.

Just as the Michelin star guide recognises exceptional restaurants, the Michelin Key guide will list exceptional hotels around the world.

After ranking restaurants for more than 120 years, this will be the first time the brand has cast its judgement on hotels.

There will be five criteria by which all hotels will be judged:

  1. The hotel must be a destination unto itself and “contribute to the local experience”
  2. Excellence in architecture and interior design
  3. Quality and regularity of service, comfort and maintenance
  4. Uniqueness of character
  5. Consistency between the quality of the experience and the price

For the inaugural guide, Michelin has selected 5,300 hotels in 120 countries.

It's not yet known if the hotels will be awarded just one key or between one and three keys in line with the Michelin star rating system.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said: “Just as the Michelin Star distinguishes those restaurants that are at the peak of their art, the Michelin Key recognises the most exceptional hotels throughout the world. It is also an acknowledgment of the teamwork of committed enthusiastic hospitality professionals.”

The move comes almost five years after Michelin acquired Tablet Hotels, a platform for boutique and luxury hotels. Michelin Key hotels can be booked via the Michelin platform and Michelin will receive a commission on each booking made via its website.
