The next total solar eclipse will take place in April 2024

Specialist tour operator New Scientist Discovery Tours has revealed two itineraries for those who want to witness the next total solar eclipse and its effects at its strongest.

The itineraries will also offer guests the opportunity to understand the science behind this phenomenon with insightful talks and briefings from astronomy experts.

The first total eclipse over North America since 2017, next year’s spectacle will cross into the USA from Mexico, making Texas one of the best locations to observe it from. From this vantage point, witnesses will see the longest possible duration of the eclipse.

The tour will be led by New Scientist’s resident astronomy expert Abigail Beall and Dr John Mason, a past president of the British Astronomical Association.

On the day, Dr Mason will host an exclusive viewing from a private ranch specially selected for its isolated setting within an expansive landscape, to maximise the impact of the eclipse.

Other highlights include talks to expand participants’ knowledge around eclipses, black holes and astronomy, and visits to several observatories in Houston, San Antonio and Austin, and hikes to unusual geological formations.

The 10-day Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Albuquerque to San Antonio, USA departs 1 April 2024 and costs US$6,850.

The eight-day Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Houston to San Antonio, USA departs 3 April 2024 and costs US$5,430.

All B&B accommodation, entry to all sites and attractions, and transport by air-conditioned coach are included. International flights/transport are not included.
