Dubai International named region’s most connected airport

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) ranked as the world's biggest 'megahub'

Dubai International (DXB) has retained its position as the best-connected international airport in the Middle East and Africa, while Chicago's ORD tops the global ranking.

Aviation Analytics company OAG’s Megahubs 2022 Report analysed flight data for the top 100 largest airports based on the total number of scheduled seats booked between September 2021 and August 2022.

The top five Middle East and North Africa most-connected airlines and their leading airlines are: 

  • DXB, UAE (Emirates) 
  • RUH, Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabian Airlines)
  • DOH, Qatar (Qatar Airways)
  • JED, Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabian Airlines)
  • ADD, Ethiopia (Ethiopian Airlines)

DXB also placed at number 18 in the Top 25 Low-Cost Megahubs, with Riyadh’s RUH airport being the only other Middle East entry on the list at number 25.

The findings also highlighted that Dubai was featured in five of the top 10 busiest global international routes by number of seats. 

The DXB-RUH route came in second with 3,191,090 seats. The DXB-LHR had 2,697,593 seats at number four on the list and the DXB-JED route, which had 2,425,930 seats, was at number six. BOM-DXB was in eighth position with 1,977,537 seats, and DEL-DXB was at number 10 with 1,898,749 seats.

Dubai Media Office recently announced that a total of 23,672,468 arrivals were recorded in Dubai through all of its ports last year. This represented an 89% increase in incoming passenger traffic traffic compared to 2021.

AirlineRatings.com also recently revealed its top 20 safest airlines for 2023, with two UAE airlines making the top 10 out of 385 carriers across the globe. Etihad Airways, the UAE's national airline, ranked in third place, and Emirates came seventh, while Australia's Qantas was voted the safest airlines in the world.
