Europe hotel rates see inflated spike over Easter

Middle East staycations may represent even greater value to GCC travellers

Travel intelligence provider Mabrian has conducted a hotel price analysis of 20 destinations in Europe over the 2023 Easter holiday period.

Rooms rates have risen above the rate of inflation in all destinations analysed, except for in Naples, Italy; Tirana, Albania, and Budapest, Hungary, where the prices of five-star hotels have experienced a slight decline of 1%, 3% and 5% respectively.

The average price increase across all categories is significantly greater than the annual inflation rate based on February 2023 published prices for a stay between the 10 and 17 April 2023.

Barcelona in Spain, Brussels in Belgium and Rome in Italy are the destinations with the highest spike in hotel prices, ranging from a 30% to 33% increase on average.

Mabrian also noted that Barcelona is the city where prices have increased the most at three-star hotels compared to Easter 2022, with a 43% increase.

In four-star hotels, the highest rise is in Brussels, with a 34% increase.

In five-star hotels, Paris tops the table, with the average room rate 30% higher than in 2022.

Commenting on the findings, Mabrian director of Sales & Marketing, Carlos Cendra said: "While it's clear that hotel prices are rising sharply, we must look at this rise in the context of inflation and rising supply costs.

"In addition, we have to take into account the increase in staff operating costs, due to the lack of manpower and the necessary improvement in conditions. All this is combined with a strong demand for travel during this period, which pushes prices up."
