Lufthansa launches ‘green fare’ option on select flights

Lufthansa launches ‘green fare’ option on select flights

The initiative is being tested in Scandinavia before being rolled out

Lufthansa Group has launched fares that include ‘full compensation’ for CO2 emissions.

The new green fare, available in Scandinavia on flights operated by Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, includes an additional premium that covers the full cost of offsetting the journey; 80% will be done through climate protection projects and 20% through the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

Earlier this year, the Lufthansa Group introduced the option for passengers to offset their flights and integrated this into the online booking process. Lufthansa and Swiss customers can currently offset the CO2 emissions of their flight on board with the option displayed on the inflight entertainment system on selected flights. In addition, members of Miles & More can use award miles to buy offsets.

The newly introduced green fare option will initially be offered to guests booking flights from Denmark, Sweden and Norway during the online booking process directly after the flight selection. The fare is available in both economy and business class for flights within Europe. The new fare also includes the option of free rebooking, as well as extra status and award miles.

This autumn, travel agency partners in Scandinavia will also offer the new fare.

Responsible for brand and sustainability, Lufthansa Group executive board member Christina Foerster said: “We want to make CO2-neutral flying a matter of course in the future. To this end, we already offer our guests the most comprehensive range of services and are consistently expanding this further.

"As of now, we are offering a dedicated green fare for the first time, which already includes the complete offsetting of the flight’s CO2 emissions through sustainable aviation fuel and certified climate protection projects, already embedded in the price. People don’t just want to fly and discover the world – they also want to protect it. We are driven by the need to support our customers with the right offers.”
