Dubai International ranks as world’s busiest airport

DXB also won Airport of the Year at the Aviation Business Awards 2022

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is gathering accolades – and increasing numbers – as 2022 comes to an end.

A report by aviation data provider OAG stated that Dubai International Airport (DXB) increased its seat capacity by 8% on the previous month, taking the total number of airline seats to 4.6 million in December 2022.

The increase in passenger traffic confirmed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers in the world in December, with Heathrow Airport coming in second place with 3.5 million seats.

The increase, attributed to winter holiday travellers and football fans coming to the region to watch the FIFA World Cup, saw DXB also retain its position as the second busiest ‘global airport’ in the world, when measuring both domestic and international airline capacity. Globally Atlanta remains the world’s busiest airport, with Tokyo Haneda in third place.

The Department of Economy and Tourism has also relaunched its three-month long Dubai Destinations campaign, highlighting the emirate as a prime winter sun location, which is another contributing factor to the surge in visitors.

Meanwhile, the Aviation Business Awards 2022 chose DXB as the Airport of the Year due to its “unrivalled performance”, welcoming 28 million passengers in the first half of 2022, nearly three times the volume during the same period last year, while enhancing all aspects of its service.
