Qatar records 157% YOY increase in visitor arrivals

The nation welcomed 2.56 million visitors in the first eight months of 2023

Qatar welcomed more than 2.56 million visitors from January until 25 August 2023, exceeding the full-year arrival figures for 2022.

Qatar Tourism said the figures were influenced by the hosting of the FIFA World Cup in late 2022, which increased its exposure as an international tourist destination.

It also credited the extension of the Hayya scheme for existing cardholders and the relaunch of the Hayya platform for travellers who require a visa to enter.

Qatar Tourism chairman and Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker said: "The growth in the number of international visitors to Qatar shows the fruit of Qatar Tourism's strategy to leverage the momentum of the world's biggest sporting event late last year.

“By focusing on our priority markets and through a multi-pronged approach, which sees strong efforts and initiatives across our strategic pillars, we have been able to welcome visitors from all corners of the globe and showcase Qatar’s seamless blend of modernity and cultural authenticity."

Over the past months, Qatar Tourism has launched several campaigns and initiatives aimed at boosting its tourism sector and raising global awareness of its expanded hospitality offering.

Immediately after the World Cup, Qatar Tourism launched its 'Feel More in Qatar' global campaign, which positions it as the Middle East's top choice for well-travelled tourists, focusing on families.

The growth in visitor numbers can also be attributed to Qatar's cruise tourism offering. In the 2022/23 cruise season, Qatar Tourism welcomed international ships with MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises offering seven-night itineraries around the Gulf for the first time.

Since the start of the year, Qatar Tourism has also presented an ongoing calendar of events, with upcoming events including the Geneva International Motor Show - Qatar, Formula 1 and Expo 2023 in October, followed by the MotoGP in November.
